President’s message

Barranca Pool Members,

We hope you had a great pool season. From our perspective this summer at the pool was fantastic! The new heater worked well and the new shade structures were appreciated by all. Our staff worked hard to keep the pool safe, clean, and open as much as possible. The Board is always looking for new ideas and people willing to help us keep the pool open and operating, so please let us know if you can join the board. We welcome our new VP Adam Rondinone, and our new Operations Manager Matt Hemphill. Word of mouth advertising is the best way to get new families interested in becoming members so please tell your friends and new neighbors! We would love to max out our membership at 300!! The Board will be working hard to get everything ready for next season during our winter off season. Send us your thoughts and volunteer to help make next season even better!

Jeremy
President, BMPA

House Chair Message

Hi, my name is Matt Hemphill and I have taken on the duty of BMPA House Operations manager. I grew up in White Rock and worked at Pinon Park Pool for 7 years. I started in the basket room, then became a lifeguard, and finally worked as manager for 3 years. During that time, I learned a lot about pool operations, especially what it takes to keep these aging pools running.

At Barranca Pool this year, we have seen some big improvements to the pool. This included the installation of a new pool heater. Many patrons have commented that the pool felt warmer this year than before, assuredly in part to the effectiveness of our new heater. The heater was a substantial investment, but a critical one for keeping the pool operating effectively. Other items completed included fixing a broken chemical controller, installation of new safety glass in the entrance door (this was broken near the end of last year), replacement and repair of sump pumps for the pit, replacement of the contactor for the pool pump, repair and maintenance of the chemical pumps and lines, light repairs to cracked deck concrete, temporary replacement of damaged pool tiles around the pool edge, a concrete repair to a rather large void in the gutter on the corner by the deep end, and numerous
other minor issues.

Moving forward, there are many planned repairs that we will continue to work through in order to keep our pool a fun and safe place for all of our members. Some of these include continued repair and replacement of any damaged tiles around the pool, re-securing rope anchors, and work to improve spalling in the decking concrete. There will undoubtedly be many additional needs come up as well.

I'd like to thank all those who helped out with pool maintenance and repair this year. Moving forward, we will continue to lean on the willingness and expertise of our members to keep the pool operational for many years to come.

Thank you for the great summer and, once again, your help is always appreciated. Please get in contact with me, or any of the pool board members, if you are interested in contributing to the ongoing maintenance and repair effort.

Treasurer’s Report (October 2022)

The 2022 fiscal year held a couple of large capital expenses compared to the last two years. (Please see the budget report for year end numbers.) The boiler replacement ($32,177.65) and rebuilding shade structures ($4,865.12) along with various other maintenance expenses were covered by money in savings from the previous year. Payroll was significantly higher this year compared to last year, due in part to the change in minimum wage. Utilities and chlorine saw large increases as well. On a positive note, it was fun to have the option of a snack bar this year and several members enjoyed booking parties.

News for 2023: Expenses are not expected to be lower next year and we need to stay focused on keeping our budget on track. Even so, the board would like to bring back the early bird discount and increase the work deposit. The yearly assessment will be $525 ($450 base assessment + $75 work deposit) if paid by 30 April. After that date, the assessment will be $550 ($475 base assessment + $75 work deposit). Remember, your work deposit (increasing to $75 this year) can be refunded by volunteering 3-4 hours. You can participate in a work party, work with one of the committees that still need to be formed (gardening, activities, etc) or tackle projects around the pool that need to be completed. This is a community resource and it will take all of us members pulling together to keep it going!

Creativity is always appreciated and ideas welcome; feel free to e-mail me directly (treasurer@barrancapool.com) or the entire board (board@barrancapool.com). We are all volunteers and, while it can be difficult to stay on top of correspondence (especially during the busy times while planning to open, being open, and planning to close), we do read and discuss everything that is received.

I have enjoyed working with the BMPA board, staff, and members over the past year and look forward to another great year in 2023.

Employment Chair message

BMPA was SO lucky to have such a fantastic staff this year! They worked hard, kept up on duties and made great connections with the patrons and each other. It is always a hard time towards the end of the summer when our staff move on to college. It leaves a hole in our hearts and in our scheduling/hours but we always plow through. If there are questions as to why hours are cut at that time, that is the reasoning. As always, I am SO proud to be a part of employment and be around these awesome employees each season. Recruitment for Summer 2023 employees will begin January 2023. Job applications will be posted on our website. Interviews will be conducted in February. Positions available are Manager, Head Guard, 1st year guard, 2nd year guard, 3rd year guard and basketroom. Positions awarded will be determined by the interview, qualifications and if they have been previously employed by BMPA. All applicants must be 14 years old BEFORE the pool opens at the end of May. Those individuals seeking guard positions (age 15 and over) must complete and pass the Red Cross lifeguard training course by the time the pool opens.

The employment application will be posted on our website. Completed applications can be emailed to employment@barrancapool.com

See you next season!

Membership Chair message

BMPA finally had a “normal” year following the challenges of COVID the past couple of years. In spitenof the being the 4th wettest season on record for Los Alamos, It was GREAT to see so many of the old faces at pool all summer! We were also able to welcome many new members and families as memberships transferred and folks moved in and out of our community. However, COVID did have a negative impact on memberships, and we lost some families. The “good news” hiding in decreased membership numbers is that we are wide open for new members in the spring of 2023! Please spread the word that after the busy holiday season we will have a membership drive and hopefully increase memberships from approximately 225-250 in 2022 closer to our membership capacity of 300. To encourage new memberships, we will continue to improve our online capability as well as keep our rates competitive. We will also have a sale prior to Memorial Day 2023 when the pool opens so that memberships are reasonable. We look forward to a busy pool season in 2023 and hope current members will help us with our membership drive and encourage others to join our Barranca Pool family!

Be on the lookout for more information in our spring newsletter and pass along this information to anyone you think might be interested.

We will also post our bylaws and membership responsibilities so all of us can review what pool membership means and how to keep our pool thriving! We appreciate our members and hope to see you all next year.
