All applicants must be 14 years old before the pool opens at the end of May. Those seeking guard positions (age 15 and over) must complete the training by the time the pool opens. We are particularly interested in the applicants that can work from when school starts in August 2023 to Labor Day.

Job Descriptions
Manager & Assistant Manager
The Manager of the Barranca Mesa Pool is to ensure by his/her own efforts andthose of the other employees, a safe clean, attractive pool so that members mayswim and relax in a pleasant atmosphere.
The Manger is responsible for the overall operation of the facility. S/he isanswerable to the Pool Board during the operating season and shall make periodicreports concerning current operations and personnel.
S/he shall ensure that all safety devices, mechanical gear, diving boards, fittings,furniture, etc., are in peak operating condition.
S/he shall ensure that all guards are adequately trained, both in general AmericanRed Cross procedures and specific procedures for the Barranca Mesa Pool; thatthey are alert at all times, that they cover all areas of the pool, that theyimpartially enforce the rules in a firm and polite manner, and that their socialactivities do not interfere with their duties. They shall be trained in the operationof the plant and equipment.
The personal appearance of the Manager and all other employees shall be neat,clean, and presentable.
The Manager is responsible for regulating the working hours of the staff andkeeping complete records of same. At all times that the pool is open, either s/he,his/her assistant, or head lifeguard shall be present.
Every effort shall be made to provide clear, clean, non-irritating water in the pool,including the wading pool.
S/he shall ensure that the physical plant is clean and neat at all times.
S/he shall ensure that any sound system be played at a moderate level, and thatprograms be balanced. It is important both for the comfort of pool members andfor our relations in the neighborhood that the sound level be moderate.
S/he shall promote and arrange for a balanced schedule of classes, taught byqualified instructors, and see that they are adequately publicized.
The Manager shall be responsible for the purchase of all operating supplies andshall ensure that adequate supplies are on hand. S/he shall show proper concernfor operating costs. All purchases shall be reported to the house committeechairman, and bills submitted promptly.
The pool shall be open during hours specified by the board to members and theirlegal guests. Safety of the members may require that swimming be stopped, butonly under unusual circumstances shall the doors be closed during these hours.Under such circumstances, the reasons shall be prominently posted.
S/he shall be ultimately responsible for the keeping of the various pool records.These should be complete and legible. Specific examples are: guest log, lessonlog, injury log, snack and pop records, work hour log, maintenance log, and thedaily log. The daily log shall include hourly checks of pH and chlorine levels,temperature, and chemicals added, and the number of swimmers in the water andon the deck listed separately. Records of total alkalinity shall be made daily.
In the event of an emergency, the Manager and necessary employees shall remainavailable until the emergency is ended. The board members responsible for thearea of activity shall be notified immediately in case of an emergency.
The Manager shall work together with the board members or committee havingspecific areas of responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the pool.
The Manager shall assist the employment committee in the selection of personnelto fill other staff positions.
The Manager will assist the Pool Board in evaluating the operating procedures forthe pool by making recommendations for new or revised procedures.
Expected to put forth an effort for the interpool meet at the end of the summer.May assign primary coaching duties to another employee but will guide andencourage the other coaching employee and kids.
Head Guard
The primary function of a guard is to provide safety services for swimmers withinthe pool and on the surrounding deck areas.
Guards shall be adequately trained and shall take such training as required by theManager and Poll Board.
S/he shall hold a current Senior American Red Cross Lifesaving certificate, acurrent CPR certificate, a current American Red Cross First Aid certificate, andhold a current Water Safety Instructor’s certificate.
Be responsible to the Manager and his/her assistant and follow his/herinstructions.
Assist the Manager in maintaining a clean, neat, safe physical plant at all times.
Perform such maintenance and operating duties as are assigned by the Manager.
Report ready for work on time. Notify the Manager in advance as much aspossible of any unusual circumstances which will prevent normal work functionsfrom being carried out.
A two week notice must be given for any time off.
Be neat and personable.
Attend strictly to the business of guarding. This is not a place for socializing.
S/he will not socialize with any person, staff or patron, while on the guard standor performing other lifeguard duties.
S/he will be required to attend weekly staff meetings at a time and place specifiedby the manager.
S/he will be required to work and/or participate during both the 4th of July partyand the Interpool meet unless excused by the manager two weeks in advance.
Do not leave the premises without the express permission of the Manager.
Twenty-four (24) hour notice of termination may be given by the Manager forjustifiable cause.
Swim suits will be provided by the Association and are the property of the guard.The warm-up suits belong to the Association. The guard is responsible for his/herwarm-up suit and shall return it upon terminating employment.
Minimum age: 17 by beginning of season.

Basket Room
Admit only members and their legal guests and keep an accurate guest record.
The basket room is a central place of business and as such should be businesslike.It is not a social center. It should be kept neat and free of clutter. All items ofclothing, etc. belonging to employees shall be in baskets, or neatly hung. Basketsshall be in place in the racks, and not on the counter or floor.
No one other than on duty staff members are allowed to be in the basket room.
Be responsible to the Manager for scheduling of hours and work performance. Beresponsible to the membership secretary for admittance of members and guests,punching guest cards, keeping guest logs, etc. Be responsible to the treasurer forcash records and money.
A two week notice must be given for any time off needed.
Make hourly checks of the dressing rooms for soap, paper supplies, andmiscellaneous items. Replenish or clean as necessary, and pick up loose items.
Sell snacks and soda and keep accurate records of sales to both staff and patrons.
Will be responsible for all snack bar inventory and counting money at the end ofeach shift.
Will be required to attend a weekly staff meeting at a time and place specified bythe manager.
Will be required to work and/or participate during the 4th of July party and theInterpool meet unless excused by the manager at least two weeks in advance.
Be neat and personable. Answer questions that arise and give information.
Perform such other maintenance and operating tasks as are assigned by theManager or Head Guard.
Take hourly count of swimmers in the pool and on the deck and record results.
Keep records of lessons given and attendance at lessons.
The poolside window shall be kept open except during severe weather conditions.
Do not leave the premises without the express permission of the Manager or HeadGuard.
Be available for work on weekends and holidays. Vacation schedules must bearranged so that the pool-operating schedule is not disrupted. The managershould approve vacation, in advance.
The pool Manager for a justifiable cause may give twenty-four (24) hour notice of termination.
